What is your favourite place in the world?
London. It’s my home, it’s my work, it’s my relaxation, it’s the centre of my life. Richard Park is the place I love to go to walk along the river. I love to visit the markets, and I adore staying home and watching telly.
If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be?
I think I would go and have a look at Rio de Janeiro. It’s got the Olympic Games going on in 2016. There is something rather exciting and scary about it – there’s a bit of a frisson about Rio. And I’ve never been to South America, so I would be fascinated to go there.
What is your favourite food when you are travelling?
Fresh local seafood would be perfect. You can’t get better than that – I adore oysters. Cathy won’t eat fish which is quite frustrating, so I have to cook for myself. I love experimenting with local delicacies like the bullfrog I tried in Shanghai, which was vile!
Who is the most famous person you’ve met?
The Queen. I’ve met her more than a dozen times. The last time was a couple of months ago when I was singing at a private function for the Royal National Institute of Blind People. It doesn’t matter how many times you meet her, you’re always a little bit awestruck. She has a surreal quality about her, a glow. And it’s always really exciting. She’s never said anything that’s really surprised me. She is far too clever for that.
Who was your favourite singer when you were growing up?
I grew up listening to the classic greats, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. But from the age of 16 when I began singing, I really got into Joni Mitchell. Her songs are so eloquent, beautifully crafted, personal and heartfelt. I just think she is brilliant.
